LASIK / Spectacle Removal Surgery

Overview

LASIK surgery is popular surgery to correct eye vision in nearsighted or farsighted. Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery can be an alternative to glasses or contact lenses. People with normal vision, cornea refracts light precisely onto the retina at the back of the eye. But with nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) or astigmatism, the light is refracts incorrectly, resulting in blurred vision.

In case of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, contact lenses can correct vision, but reshaping the cornea itself will provide the necessary refraction.

Why LASIK Surgery is done?

Lasik surgery is done to correct one of these below vision problems:

Nearsightedness (myopia): In this condition you can see objects clearly which are close enough, but things farther away are blurry.
Farsightedness (hyperopia): In this condition you can see objects clearly which are far away, but things which are close are blurry.
Astigmatism: In this condition near and distant vision becomes blurry, because shape of eyes.
If you are wearing glasses or contact lenses, contact to best eye doctors to get eye vision corrected with the help of LASIK surgery. Your eye doctor will tell you whether surgery is right for you or not. Doctor will not suggest surgery:

If you are younger than 18
If you are pregnant
If lot off recent changes in your vision prescription
If cornea is thin or uneven
If you have any condition such as glaucoma or very dry eyes
If you have other health issues-diabetes, lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.

Before the LASIK Surgery

People who have carefully with doctor’s advice evaluated that if they are right candidate for lasik surgery or not, are intended to have long term results. For these doctor will examine patient physically and clinically. The tests includes- Dry eye testing, pupil testing, Contrast Sensitivity Testing, Keratometry, Corneal Topography, etc. After all the testing only doctor will recommend whether LASIK surgery is right for any patient or not.

Eye surgeon will provide guidelines depending upon type and from how long you are wearing glasses or lens. Eye surgeon will also look for signs of any eye infections, swelling, any medical history, dry eyes, high eye pressure, etc.

During the LASIK Surgery Procedure

Lasik surgery is done in 20-30 minutes. Some medicine is given to help with relax or for numbness. After numbness eye drops are placed in eyes. Suction ring is placed on your eyes before cutting corneal flap. Your eye surgeon will cut a small hinged flap away from front of eye by using small blade or by cutting laser. Back fold eye flap gives access to surgeon to part of eye cornea to be reshaped. Eye surgeon will reshapes part of cornea with the help of programmed laser.

After reshaping the eye cornea, surgeon put the flap back into place. The flap usually heals without stitches. Flap heals without any stitches. During the surgery, patient will be asked to focus on point of light. If patient needs LASIK surgery in both eyes, surgeon will generally conduct the procedure on the same day.

After the LASIK Surgery

Immediately after surgery patient may feel mild itchy, burning sensation. Generally patient can feel little pain and for that doctor may recommend some pain medications or eye drops to keep comfortable for some hours after surgery.

Vision won’t be clear right after surgery. Vision correction will take 2-3 months after LASIK surgery. Basis on how your vision was good before surgery, improvisation will take place. Visit to your eye doctor for follow up after one or two days of surgery. Follow your doctor’s recommendation about how soon you can resume normal activities.

Risk of LASIK Eye Surgery

Like any surgery, LASIK surgery also puts some risk which includes-dry eyes, double vision, halos, flap problems, vision loss or changes, it is possible that laser will remove too much tissue from eye (Overcorrections), it is also possible laser will remove little tissue from your eye (Undercorrection), Astigmatism
